My wish to find a new direction for my work coupled with the toxicity of enamel paint led me to think about new materials. After pondering in my studio for days I was closing up shop and emptied a candle of its melted wax into the trash. The wax fell onto a piece of cardboard and I watched the wax harden into the shapes of a figure leading a horse. The simple relationship of these forms and their emotional quality encouraged me to learn more about encaustic painting.
